Self-guided walking holidays are expertly designed travel experiences that allow guests to explore a destination on foot at their own pace, without being part of a group. They combine the freedom of independent travel with the reassurance of professional planning, making them ideal for travelers who want flexibility without the stress of organizing every detail themselves. Routes are carefully selected and mapped, with clear navigation provided through guidebooks, maps, or GPS apps, and accommodation is pre-booked each night in comfortable hotels, inns, or guesthouses. Luggage is transferred ahead, so walkers carry only a light daypack and can fully enjoy the journey.
Málaga is full of very special corners. The GR 242 takes you through its mountains and natural landscapes as well as its famous white villages, with their history and rich gastronomy. Venture into this land between the sea and the mountains and discover why so many people have fallen in love with it.
Your journey along the GR 242 begins in the welcoming village of Periana, a peaceful mountain village surrounded by olive groves and open views of La Viñuela reservoir. The trail gradually rises into the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park, where fresh air, forest paths and panoramic scenery set the tone for the days ahead.
The first major stop is Canillas de Aceituno, a traditional white village perched on the mountainside. After a rest, the route continues through rugged terrain, climbing and descending through ravines and mountain slopes until you reach Cómpeta, one of the most vibrant villages in the Axarquía. With its narrow streets, lively squares and excellent local wine, it’s an ideal place to recharge.
From Cómpeta, the path leads deeper into the natural park, offering wide views toward the sea. The journey continues through peaceful landscapes until you arrive in Frigiliana, often considered one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. Its maze of whitewashed lanes and Moorish architecture invite you to slow down, explore and enjoy the atmosphere.
The final stretch descends toward the coast. As the mountains open, the blue of the Mediterranean appears ahead, guiding you to Nerja. Here you can celebrate the end of your walk with beaches, sea views and the famous Balcony of Europe.
This route blends nature, culture and coastal charm—an unforgettable journey from mountains to sea.
